Holyhead Port to Reopen Terminal 5 on 16th January 2025

Posted: Friday, 10 January 2025

We are pleased to share an important update regarding the reopening of Holyhead Port following the extensive disruption caused by Storm Darragh.

Stena Line, the operator of Holyhead Port, has confirmed that Terminal 5 will reopen on Thursday, 16th January 2025, restoring critical infrastructure for ferry services between Dublin and Holyhead.  This reopening will provide access for both Stena Line and Irish Ferries ships operating on the route, ensuring that normal capacity is available.

Key Details About the Reopening

  • Terminal 5 Operations: Engineers have worked tirelessly to address the structural damage sustained during the storm. With Terminal 5 reopening, an adjusted timetable will allow for a full schedule of eight daily sailings across both operators, restoring vital connectivity between Ireland and Wales.
  • Adjusted Timetable: Ferry services will operate on a revised schedule to accommodate the temporary changes. Berthing trials are underway to ensure readiness for operations.
  • Terminal 3 Status: While Terminal 5 will be fully operational, Terminal 3 remains closed. Stena Line will provide an update on its reopening timeline as soon as possible.

A Strategic and Resilient Future

The reopening of Holyhead Port highlights the importance of the Dublin-Holyhead route as a critical link for both freight and passenger services. The recent disruption has underscored the need for robust infrastructure to ensure resilience and reliability in the face of future challenges.

The Welsh Government has announced the formation of a multi-stakeholder task force to address these challenges and develop long-term strategies for Holyhead Port. This initiative will focus on ensuring the port’s stability and capacity to meet future demands while mitigating risks posed by climate-driven changes.

Collaboration and Commitment

Irish Taoiseach Simon Harris and Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan have emphasised the strategic importance of Holyhead Port. In recent discussions, both leaders acknowledged the essential role the port plays in sustaining supply chains and maintaining connectivity between Ireland and Wales.  They expressed a shared commitment to ensuring its resilience and future growth.

Investments, including support for the Anglesey Freeport and commitments from Stena Ports, underline a collaborative approach between governments and industry to secure Holyhead’s role as a vital transport hub for decades to come.

Looking Ahead

We extend our sincere thanks to our customers for their patience and understanding during this challenging period. The reopening of Terminal 5 marks a significant step toward restoring full operations and ensuring uninterrupted service along this critical route.

Stay tuned for further updates on the status of Holyhead Port and the progress of Terminal 3.  Should you have any questions, please contact your usual HANNON representative.
