Dutch Avocados retain popularity amongst Irish consumers
Holland is Key to Ireland’s Fresh Avocado Supply – How HANNON Keeps the Chain Moving
Fresh avocados—especially the Hass variety—are now a staple in Ireland’s wholesale, retail, and foodservice supply chains. With demand increasing year-round and spikes driven by holidays, promotional campaigns, or seasonal temperatures, ensuring fast and reliable access to quality product is critical.
Ireland’s number one source of avocado imports is the Netherlands—Europe’s leading hub for secondary distribution of fresh avocados arriving from around the world. Whether routed via major Dutch entry points such as Rotterdam or through surrounding logistics centres, avocados entering the EU are consolidated, ripened, and re-exported across the continent—including to Ireland.
HANNON Transport supports this flow with daily groupage and full load (FTL) services from Netherlands and Belgium into Ireland and Northern Ireland. With our own chilled fleet, customs teams, and Poeldijk-based hub, we help fresh produce importers and wholesalers maintain consistent supply while adapting quickly to market fluctuations.
Netherlands – Europe’s Avocado Hub
In 2024, avocado imports into Netherlands reached over 518 million kilos, an increase of 25% since 2020. The total value of avocado trade rose to more than €1.7 billion, driven by rising EU-wide consumption and demand for ripened, ready-to-eat product.
Key origins for imported avocados include:
- Peru (34%)
- Colombia (16%)
- South Africa (12%)
- Kenya (10%)
- Chile (7%)
- Morocco, Spain, and Israel (3% each)
Once in Netherlands, avocados move quickly through specialist ripening and packing facilities, with Rotterdam and surrounding trade zones playing a key role. From there, HANNON consolidates consignments for onward transport to Ireland and Northern Ireland, using our own network and assets.
High-Frequency Groupage Built for Efficient Fresh Produce Distribution
HANNON Transport provides a daily, high-frequency groupage service from Netherlands and Belgium—built specifically for fresh produce logistics.
With the ability to collect from as little as one pallet, we enable Irish importers, wholesalers, and distributors to consolidate multiple supplier orders into a single, temperature-controlled shipment.
This model supports responsive and cost-efficient supply chains, allowing fresh produce operators to manage fluctuations, reduce lead times, and operate with agility—without relying on full loads to justify movement.
All operations are controlled end-to-end by HANNON staff, fleet, and infrastructure, ensuring reliability, consistency, and visibility at every stage.
Precision-Controlled Transport to Customer Requirements
Every fresh produce consignment we manage is delivered in line with specific instructions set by the customer, covering temperature, humidity, handling, and scheduling.
For avocado consignments, this often includes:
- +4°C to +5.5°C transport temperature for mature-green Hass avocados
- Slightly higher ranges (e.g. +6°C to +7°C) for ripe or semi-ripe product
- 90–95% relative humidity, where specified
- Defined separation, cross-docking or timed delivery requirements
Our role is to execute these specifications exactly as instructed—from collection at Dutch or Belgian facilities to final delivery in Ireland or Northern Ireland.
Dual-Temperature Trailers for Mixed Fresh Produce Loads
To accommodate consignments with varying environmental requirements, HANNON operates a fleet of dual-temperature trailers, equipped with partitioned compartments and independent temperature zones.
This configuration allows for the simultaneous transport of fresh produce types with different handling profiles—including avocados, citrus, and other fresh fruit and vegetables (FFV)—within a single secure consignment.
Thanks to the high volume and frequency of trailer movements we operate across Netherlands and Belgium, our planning teams can configure and allocate trailer setups quickly—even at short notice—to meet specific customer requirements for mixed load capacity and temperature compliance.
This provides a flexible, efficient, and fully compliant transport option that supports multi-product consolidation without compromise.
