Driving Sustainability: HANNON’s Green Roadmap for Refrigerated Transport

As the demand for temperature-controlled transport continues to grow, so does the responsibility to reduce carbon emissions and operate more sustainably. The logistics sector is vital to food supply chains but also faces increasing pressure to address its environmental impact—particularly in fuel consumption, refrigeration energy use, and waste.

At HANNON Transport, we are committed to delivering sustainable logistics that maintain freshness and quality while significantly reducing our environmental footprint. Through a range of innovative practices and technologies—from alternative fuels to eco-efficient infrastructure—we are building a greener, more responsible future for refrigerated transport.

Why Sustainability Matters in Cold Chain Logistics

Refrigerated transport is essential for delivering perishable goods such as fresh produce, meat, dairy, and horticultural products. But cold chain logistics also pose environmental challenges:

  • High Energy Use – Refrigerated trailers require consistent temperature control, often over long distances, leading to greater energy consumption.
  • Carbon Emissions – HGVs still rely heavily on diesel, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Risk of Waste – Spoiled goods from temperature fluctuations or delays can lead to increased food waste.

HANNON Transport’s Green Initiatives for 2025

We are actively transforming our refrigerated transport services with a clear focus on reducing environmental impact—without compromising our service quality.

✅ Fleet Upgrades: Investing in Fuel-Efficient & Lower-Emission Vehicles

Our fleet is being updated regularly to include vehicles meeting the latest EURO 6 standards, cutting nitrogen oxide and CO₂ emissions. Our driver training and telematics monitoring programmes promote fuel-efficient driving behaviour and reduce idling. We also maintain strict fuel management protocols to reduce unnecessary consumption and environmental impact.

✅ Route Planning & Load Optimisation

We use advanced logistics software to reduce mileage and fuel use by planning the most efficient routes. Round-tripping and shipment consolidation help eliminate empty miles and improve load efficiency.

✅ Alternative Fuels: Rolling Out HVO In Our Smaller Fleet

As part of our decarbonisation roadmap, we are introducing Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) across our smaller vehicle fleet. This renewable diesel provides up to 90% lower carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil diesel, is fully compatible with modern diesel engines, and requires no modifications.

What is HVO Fuel?
milesBIO HVO100 is a next-generation renewable diesel. Unlike conventional biodiesel, it’s a drop-in fuel that works seamlessly with existing diesel engines—offering a scalable solution for reducing emissions across smaller transport operations.

Building a Greener Future in Cold Chain Logistics

At HANNON Transport, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact while continuing to deliver high-quality, time-sensitive logistics services.

Our future-facing strategy includes expanding the use of alternative fuels like HVO, further investing in low-emission refrigeration technology, scaling route optimisation and load efficiency, and building stronger partnerships for waste reduction.

Together, these initiatives reflect our goal to lead the refrigerated transport sector in environmental responsibility—while continuing to meet the demanding standards of the modern supply chain.
